Why I Started Refract
I spent years sending cases out to labs across Australia before I built this one.
The ceramic work was usually good. What wasn't good was everything around it. Getting an actual answer from the technician who made the crown meant an email, then a wait, then maybe a reply the next day if you were lucky. And when a case came back wrong, the cost hit twice: once in the remake, once in the rebooked appointment I now had to find room for in a full day.
Neither of those is a materials problem. They're communication problems. So I built a lab around fixing them.
Refract exists because I wanted a lab I could actually talk to. Not a support inbox, not a case-tracking portal, an actual technician who picks up the case and stays on it.
In the early years, that meant working case by case with the technicians directly: reviewing the work, giving feedback, correcting anything that didn't read right from a dentist's chair rather than a lab bench. That went on until the quality checks and technician training were at a standard I'd trust on my own patients. Cases don't need to route through me individually anymore, the training and the QC benchmark built in those years are what the lab runs on now.
And if a remake is needed, you're not billed for it again, unless the prescription changed after the case was already in production. That's the standard I hold the lab to, not a case-by-case call.
The Standard We Build To
Cutting corners on materials was never the plan, that's how a lab ends up with the same communication and remake problems it started with. Refract runs on established dental ceramic systems, chosen for consistency case to case, not for what looks best in a single showcase piece. The goal isn't a hero crown. It's a lab you don't have to think about, case after case.
The Point of All This
Australian dentists, in Melbourne and beyond, shouldn't have to choose between aesthetic work they trust and a lab cost that protects their margin. That trade-off is what Refract was built to remove: direct access to the person doing your case, a materials standard you don't have to double-check, and a cost structure that doesn't erode every time something needs a second look.
